Een omgekeerde kwal die heeft geleerd zichzelf niet enkel op de zeebodem te bevestigen maar een hard, kalkhoudend kalksteenskelet uit te scheiden, dat gedurende miljoenen jaren huurders heeft aangetrokken.\r\n\r\nSymbiotische algen genaamd zooxanthellae leven in het weefsel van het koraal. Ze fotosynthetiseren zonlicht waardoor suikers ontstaan die het koraal voedt. Het wil niet, maar het moet wel, zodat het op korte termijn kan overleven.\r\n\r\nHierdoor wordt het koraal wit. Als de watertemperatuur binnen enkele weken afkoelt, komen de algen terug. Als de temperatuur echter hoog blijft, blijft de koraalverbleking bestaan en gaan de koralen dood.\r\n\r\nOnderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/conservation\/marine-conservation\/coral-watch\/\">koraalriffen<\/a> bijzonder gevoelig zijn voor stijgingen van de oceaantemperatuur en dat verblekingsgebeurtenissen de afgelopen 20 jaar regelmatiger en op veel grotere schaal plaatsvinden.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_4699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4699\" style=\"width: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/koh-tao\/\">Koh Tao<\/a> hebben we in 2010 een ernstige <a href=\"https:\/\/coralreefwatch.noaa.gov\/product\/50km\/southeastasia.php?fbclid=IwAR3UKYkY_vOgAmLS0BzNUKfgnYBxuBXl8NbQDrdMf3cwm-TY2acgeLzJC-U#TaoIsland_Thailand\">bleekgebeurtenis meegemaakt<\/a>.\r\n\r\nDelen van <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/snorkeling-koh-tao\/shark-bay\/\">Shark Bay<\/a> zijn niet hersteld van deze gebeurtenis, zoals te zien is in delen van de baai zelf.\r\n\r\nSindsdien hebben veel van de koraalriffen ter wereld te maken gekregen met verbleking, met een wereldwijd massableken dat tussen 2015 en 2017 is waargenomen.\r\n\r\nTijdens dit bleekevenement was Koh Tao relatief onaangetast in vergelijking met andere gebieden over de hele wereld en we hopen dat we lange tijd geen ander evenement zullen zien.\r\n\r\n<figure erop dat bleekgebeurtenissen regelmatiger en mogelijk serieuzer van aard worden.\r\n\r\nMet kortere tijdsbestekken tussen bleekgebeurtenissen is het de uitdaging dat koraalriffen voldoende tijd krijgen om te herstellen.\r\n\r\nEen aantal andere factoren, waaronder waterverontreiniging en ziekte, kunnen ook van <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/conservation\/marine-conservation\/\">invloed zijn op koralen<\/a>, waardoor ze ook de zooxanthellae verdrijven.\r\n\r\nEr is slechts een aanhoudende stijging van de watertemperatuur van 1 \u00b0 C boven het gemiddelde nodig om de koraalriffen van streek te brengen, wat kan leiden tot verbleking.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_4705\"
