href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/conservation\/marine-conservation\/\">ecosysteem onder water<\/a> dat bestaat uit kolonies van koraalpoliepen (zeer kleine organismen bestaande uit een zacht lichaam) en bij elkaar gehouden door een beschermend kalkstenen skelet.\r\n\r\nZe worden gemaakt wanneer een poliep zich hecht aan een rots of aan de zeebodem en zich vervolgens opsplitst in duizenden klonen.\r\n\r\nZe verschenen voor het eerst al 485 miljoen jaar geleden en worden vaak liefkozend de <em><strong>regenwouden van de zee genoemd<\/strong><\/em>.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_3920\" ECOSYSTEMEN<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nDe meeste koraalriffen groeien het beste in warm, ondiep water en komen het meest voor in tropische wateren over de hele wereld.\r\n\r\nZe vormen een aantal van de meest diverse ecosystemen op aarde en bieden onderdak aan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/conservation\/marine-conservation\/marine-life-interaction\/\">vele mariene soorten<\/a>, waaronder vissen, weekdieren, wormen, schaaldieren, stekelhuidigen en sponzen.\r\n\r\nKoraalriffen zijn kwetsbaar en zeer gevoelig voor wateromstandigheden, maar gedijen goed in oceaanwater dat weinig milieu.\r\n\r\nDeze onderwatersteden bieden onderdak aan een aantal mariene soorten en helpen ook bij het recycleren van voedingsstoffen. Zonder de riffen zouden mensen dergelijke medicijnen niet krijgen en zouden ze grotere risico\u2019s op overleven lopen.\r\n\r\nZe helpen ook de kustlijnen te beschermen door een barri\u00e8re te cre\u00ebren tegen de krachtige stromingen van de oceaan.\r\n\r\nWanneer golven op de kustlijn neerdalen, raken ze eerst de riffen, die vervolgens het water omleiden en herverdelen, waardoor het in verschillende richtingen moet vertragen.\r\n\r\nTropische stormen treffen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/koh-tao\/beaches\/\">zeker stranden<\/a> en kustlijnen, dus zonder riffen zouden deze veel gemakkelijker kunnen eroderen en verslechteren, waardoor hele gemeenschappen die langs de kustlijn leven verwoest.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_3949\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefunkyturtle.com\/conservation\/land-conservation\/\">veroorzaken schadelijke menselijke activiteiten<\/a> op het land vervuiling, overbevissing, ziekte, toegenomen invasieve soorten (waaronder mensen, onervaren duikers die koraal aanraken en verwijderen), geologische gevaren en overtollige voedingsstoffen.\r\n\r\n<a
